Kelvin Power Consultants were responsible for the detailed design of the 15km, 132kV single circuit cable route between cable landfall at Tunstall and the onshore HV substation, near Hedon in the East Riding of Yorkshire. This also included a buried 275kV, double circuit connection between the onshore substation and the National Grid connection point. Our remit also included a site presence during construction for both the Substation and Cable Route, to co-ordinate access between some 20 landowners and the principle contactor on the cable route and the principal contactor at the Substation. This role also included co-ordinating access for the ground survey, geotechnical, ecology, ordnance, drainage design and archaeology investigations and monitoring during the course of the project. The cable ducts were installed safely and in record time, with the help of some special techniques developed specifically for this project by the principal contractor. Kelvin Power Consultants also undertook the review of As Built drawings from the principle contractors.

Kelvin Power Consultants were appointed by DONG Energy to provide design services and site services for the onshore substation associated with their 210MW offshore wind farm at Westermost Rough. Design Services During the early planning stages of the project Kelvin Power Consultants provided the following services: Lead a Task Force set up by senior DONG Energy directors to carry out site selection work on six possible substation locations. Work included substantial design and layout input, advising on planning consultancy issues and planning constraints, dealing with archaeological and environmental constraints and negotiating, agreeing and delivering all the necessary legal agreements and option agreements on the four sites. Kelvin Power Consultants also chaired regular meetings with key stakeholders, the LPA, Councillors and also internal meetings. The Task Force was a success with planning permission obtained and delivering the site on time and to budget Preparation of civil works tender documentation for the substation Topographical survey of the proposed substation site. Management of ground investigations for the site 3D visualisations Supporting information for public consultations Planning drawings and documentation Following successfully securing planning consent for the substation, Kelvin Power Consultants produced full detailed designs for the onshore substation including: Primary Plant Layouts Earthing Layouts GIS Building design to incorporate horizontal GIS equipment, avoiding the need for cable basements. Building services design Civil design (piled foundations due to poor ground conditions) Elevated transformer bunds due to potential risk of flooding Precast concrete fire wall Site Roads Drainage Security Fencing Substation Site Services Kelvin Power Consultants allocated one of their QS team to be based on site to oversee cost control and contract administration. We also provided an onsite designer participate in value engineering exercises and HV Installation Manager to coordinate the construction activities and the electrical packages. The substation site was required to fit within a very small footprint and to assist the planning of the construction phase activities in such a small space, Kelvin Energy produced a 1:20 scale model of the proposed substation site. Our client, Dong Energy required the creation of a model of our substation design for their Westermost Rough 150/275kV Onshore Substation, to be used within their R.O.C drill. R.O.C, meaning Rehearsal of Concept, is a procedure in which a project is taken through each of the phases of the construction and installation process from initial site set up through to completion. We created a durable base board displaying the complete site plan, with a clear Perspex finish, which allowed our client to walk on and around the model and use washable markers for direct annotation. A range of materials were used to build the model up and construct the elements (balsa wood, foam and acrylic) allowing us to create detailed scale models of all the equipment, buildings and even construction vehicles. The model we produced allowed a complete breakdown of the construction and installation phases, as elements of the model could be slowly built up and added or taken away for a step by step guide, giving a true representation of the proposed finished site prior to construction. The R.O.C drill ran by Dong Energy proved a complete success, bringing together all the parties involved prior to construction to give an overview of general requirements and their involvements at each stage. This achieved a thorough break down and analysis, aiding the process not only by outlining underlying issues within the installation, but also dramatically improving and creating relations between all parties. The model we supplied allowed everyone to fully visualise each stage, and created discussion points to enhance understanding and appreciation of the site and the constraints around it, emphasising the importance of communication. The exercise was seen as a vital role in the development of the Westermost Rough Substation with the model being kept on site for daily use.

Kelvin Power Consultants were engaged by Danish energy company DONG Energy to provide design services for the onshore substation required for the Walney 1 Offshore Windfarm. The Walney Offshore Wind Farm comprises of two phases with a total of 102 Turbines making it one of the largest offshore wind farms in the world. Kelvin Power Consultants undertook the design of the entire substation including the preparation and presentation of planning drawings. During construction we had an onsite representative to witness the construction works. Our remit also included supporting DONG Energy on cost control of the site works. We were also responsible for arranging utility connections for the supply of power and water to the substation. Our role post construction included the compilation of as-built data and the compilation of construction information manuals for handing over to the Operations and Maintenance Department.
