Kelvin Power Consultants were employed by Powerteam Electrical services to provide Primary and civil design services for 2 new bays and to supply steel equipment support structures to complement those already installed in adjacent bays on site. Due to network operational issues, two new circuit breaker bays were required at Lovedean 132kV Substation. Some difficult ground conditions meant that the foundation solution needed careful consideration and this manifested into some bespoke arrangements for some of the major items of HV plant. With the first new bay complete, and the second under construction, this project is proof that there is a requirement for the designer to be flexible in their approach and that it is not always possible to just re-use existing designs, as ground conditions can vary locally across the same site.

Kelvin Power Consultants were engaged to provide Primary and Civil design as well as provision of Aluminium and steel substation equipment support structures to Smith Brothers Contracting for a 132/33kV greenfield substation in North Cornwall, enabling connection of 3 proposed new Solar parks onto the local DNO’s electricity network. The principle challenge was to have the substation design completed and approved by the DNO’s engineering team within an extremely limited time frame and the first phase of construction work completed on site to meet a critical outage requirement. This extremely challenging task was completed on time and successfully adopted by the DNO allowing them to re-energise the circuit in line with their requirements. Full co-operation between all parties across the project disciplines was essential to enable this to happen and Kelvin Power Consultants played a significant role in this process by producing designs in a timely manner with an eye on build-ability within a limited timeframe. The design and supply of predominantly pre-assembled welded lattice aluminium equipment support structures also helped significantly to reduce the overall site installation time.

This project was carried out for SSE Distribution Major Projects North under our recent Civil Consultancy North Framework agreement The project was for the provision of Civil and Structural design for a new 33kV indoor Switchroom at Milton of Craigie Substation, Dundee. This is required to replace the existing dated/redundant switchgear The provision of a Civil and Structural design for a 33kV Switchroom building with Integral cable basement. Including A survey of existing cable routes was available but a Site Investigation was required Civil and Structural design was based on the best functional and economic design to meet current SSE specifications. Due to the complex and numerous existing cable routes within the existing Substation, Kelvin undertook a cable route plan to identify, at the design stage, proposed new cable routes and termination points. This not only allows for an ordered approach to the cable laying and jointing but also provided the civil contractor with a comprehensive scope of works required. Design is complete and Civil works are starting. All parties reported positive feedback on both the quality of drawings and visibility of the scope of works.

Kelvin Power Consultants were engaged by Danish energy company DONG Energy and Scottish Power Renewables to provide design and project management services for the development of the West of Duddon Sands Offshore Wind Farm. The project comprised of 108 wind turbines with a total installed capacity of 389MW. Kelvin Power Consultants provided a legal manager to oversee the negotiation of all necessary legal agreements for the project from land options, site compound leases and asset crossing agreements onshore and offshore. Assistance was also provided during the consents process. The role also involved providing support throughout the OFTO process from OFGEM prequalification through to preferred bidder due diligence. From a design point of view Kelvin Power Consultants assisted with the development of the substation design which included basing a small team on site to oversee the construction works. We also assisted with planning drawings and attended public exhibitions where we were able to present a 3D walkthrough of the substation site.
